When you pay your electricity bill or renew your driving license, it's possible that you'll notice an additional charge on your bill, other than the service charge or bill amount. UAE authorities impose some additional fees depending on whether the fee is a 'knowledge fee' or a 'housing fee'.
Here are some fees you may have to pay relating to tolls, innovation, and knowledge:
Various government fees in the UAE:
The official website of the UAE government explains that local authorities charge fees on some services and transactions for the purpose of development and maintenance.
1. Road tolls Fees
2. Knowledge fees
3. Innovation fees
4. Housing fees
Let's talk about these fees in depth:
1. Roads Tolls Fees
Darb Toll Gate System
During peak traffic hours in Abu Dhabi, motorists need to pay a toll when crossing the following bridges:
1. Al Maqtaa Bridge
2. Mussafah Bridge
3. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Bridge
4. Sheikh Zayed Bridge
For each crossing, a toll of AED 4 is charged with a daily cap of AED 16 per vehicle. The maximum amount you will have to pay when you cross more than four toll gates per day is AED 16. Furthermore, some vehicles, such as Abu Dhabi's public buses, taxis, and school buses, are exempt from the toll.
All other vehicles that are not exempt must be paid via an online system, linking the number plate to the mobile number registered to the owner.
Salik Toll Gate
Road tolls are collected in Dubai under the Salik toll system, and toll gates are located at the following locations:
1. Airport Tunnel
2. Al Barsha
3. Al Garhoud
4. Al Maktoum
5. Al Mamzar South
6. Al Safa
7. Jebel Ali
A Salik tag must be displayed on the windshield of a vehicle in order to use a toll road. It costs Dh4 to pass a toll gate. When a car passes underneath a toll gate, the Salik account associated with the tag is charged.

2. Knowledge fees
According to Law No. (1) of 2018, the Knowledge fee was established by Heikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed issued the law in his capacity as Ruler of Dubai.
There is a Dh10 fee levied on every government service transaction in Dubai, including federal government services whose revenues are allocated to the Dubai government's Public Treasury.
By enacting this law, the community is encouraged to support educational and cultural projects in Dubai, as well as make the Knowledge Dirham Fee collection system simple and clear.
In accordance with the Law, fees will not be refunded when transactions are cancelled. Transactions under Dh50 and fees set by the Department of Finance will not be charged. Knowledge Dirhams and Innovation Dirhams are not applied to health care services provided by government entities.
3. The innovation fees
A law was issued by Sheikh Mohammed in 2018 on the Innovation Dirham Fee.
To encourage innovation and involve the public in supporting it, a fee is being collected. A Dh10 fee will be charged by Dubai government entities for all transactions under the law.
Revenues from the fee will be donated to the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF).
4. Housing fees
Dubai Municipality imposes a housing fee equal to five percent of the rent according to the contract. Owning or renting property in Dubai requires you to pay the Dubai Housing fee. When you look at your electricity and water bill, you'll find the fee being charged.
