In the past eight months, five people have been killed and 29 injured in e-scooter accidents in Dubai. The police recorded 32 accidents due to the “improper use” of e-scooters.

Two of the injuries were severe and 14 were moderate.

Traffic department director Major-General Saif Muhair Al Mazroui said more than 10,000 fines were imposed on riders in eight months. The police posted a video showing riders committing traffic violations.

Riders who endanger their own or others' lives are fined Dh300. The video showed violations like children aged below 16 riding an e-scooter; using it on main roads; and riding it against traffic, among others.

The officer reminded e-scooter riders to follow all relevant safety rules. It is important to follow traffic laws, stick to designated paths, avoid roads that exceed 60km/h, wear helmets and reflective jackets, abide by traffic lights and other road signs, and equip rides with bright white and reflective lights at the front and bright red and reflective lights at the back. The brakes of the vehicles must also be functional," he added.
