In Sharjah earlier this week, a hit-and-run accident killed an Asian expat on the spot. The driver who fled the scene was arrested in 48 hours.
According to Sharjah Police, the victim was crossing Mohammed Bin Zayed Road when he was hit by a car driven by a young driver.
According to Lt-Col Omar Mohammad Bou Ghanem, deputy director of the Traffic and Patrols Department at Sharjah Police, the incident occurred around 6.38pm on Wednesday. It happened near the Sheikh Khalifa Bridge in the direction of Dubai.
Sharjah Police responded immediately to the alert, but the victim was killed on the spot. They reviewed CCTV footage in the area and managed to identify the driver who fled the scene.
Soon after the incident, a manhunt led to the arrest of the motorist, who is in his 20s. A case was then filed at the Public Prosecution.
Pedestrians should avoid illegally crossing highways where vehicles move at speeds of up to 140 kph, Lt-Col Bou Ghanem warned.
It is important to follow all traffic rules and regulations at all times. Drivers who are involved in accidents must stop and take responsibility. Failure to do so may result in criminal charges.
