A four-year-old Emirati boy drowned in the swimming pool of his school in Sharjah on Wednesday morning, police said.

The fatal drowning happened at the Australian International School, off Maliha-Kalba Road in Sharjah. The Sharjah Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

During swimming class, the trainers noticed the child in an unconscious state in the pool and rushed him to a nearby hospital. The Emirati child, identified as K.A.A., was taken Al Qassimi hospital, where the medical staff attempted to resuscitate him but failed.

The young kindergarten student’s tragic death left the school staff devastated. “Our heartfelt condolences go to the pupil’s family,” a member of the school administration told Gulf News.

The school is monitored with a CCTV system and more than 45 teachers were on duty that day.

The school has agreed to cooperate with the Sharjah Police in their investigation.

A relative of the deceased child said he had two other siblings in the school. The boy was the youngest. His body will be handed to his family on Thursday.

This is the third reported drowning case involving a child in Sharjah in recent months. In June this year, an eight-year-old Pakistani boy drowned in the swimming pool of a building in Al Majaz area of Sharjah.

Also in June, a two-year-old Emirati girl drowned after falling into a plastic inflatable pool at her relative’s home in Al Dhaid.
