A toddler fell from the first floor of a shopping centre in Al Ain.

The 2-and-a-half year old had been attempting to ride the escalator with his parents on Sunday afternoon prior to Maghrib prayer, as per report. 

He leaned against a non-metallic barrier at the top of the staircase and suddenly felt it give way. 

The child toppled to the floor below, sustaining a head injury that required surgical intervention at a nearby hospital. 

A spokesperson from the shopping centre commented on the incident, reassuring the public that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the barrier's malfunction.
