Since the beginning of winter, we have all been waiting for this: temperatures in the UAE have finally dropped to single digits. As recorded by the National Centre of Meteorology, residents in several areas have been waking up to single-digit temperatures for the past few days.
The coldest day of the year was officially recorded on January 10, when temperatures in Raknah (Al Ain) dropped to 5.3°C at 7.30am. This marks the lowest temperature recorded by the NCM so far this year. On Thursday, the temperature in the area was 5.8°C.
Compared to most other areas, Raknah has experienced colder temperatures this year. On January 9, Jebel Jais mountain recorded a temperature drop to 7.2°C. Since the start of 2024, mercury has dipped below 10ºC in the country. Some mountainous regions are expected to witness even lower temperatures. As far as air temperature records go, Raknah in 2021 recorded the coldest temperature, plummeting to -2°C.
Winter in the UAE officially began after December 21, and experts have reported a milder winter than in previous years. The average temperature in December has also been higher than in previous years.
During the cold season, outdoor and adventure enthusiasts look forward to exploring the captivating snow-capped mountains of Jebel Jais. Fahad Mohamad Abdul Rehman, one of the most dedicated storm chasers in the UAE, describes Ras Al Khaimah's popular mountain as one of the best winter destinations.
There are many tourist destinations in the country, but Jebel Jais is my favorite. It’s cold, but I feel happy, peaceful, and positive when I reach such locations. A white snow-covered mountain makes it even more inviting in the winter months," he said in an interview with Khaleej Times.
It's time to wear those cosy sweaters and feel the chill.
