There has been a noticeable surge in cold and flu cases in Dubai, particularly among children, due to recent heavy rainfall, according to doctors interviewed by Khaleej Times.

Dr. Adil Sajwani, a family medicine consultant at Mediclinic Parkview Hospital in Dubai, noted an increase in acute respiratory infections such as flu and Covid-19 during rainy weather. The doctor explained that residents tend to limit outdoor activities in unstable weather, leading to a higher risk of transmission at home and in the office.

Children under the age of five are disproportionately affected, while individuals over 60 are experiencing symptoms like high fever, colds, cough, and joint pain, as reported by Dr. Osama Elsayed Rezk Elassy, clinical assistant professor and head of the division at the Centre for Paediatrics and Neonatology at Thumbay University Hospital. Parents are advised to closely monitor their children's health for symptoms such as high fever, cold, cough, and joint pain.

Dr. Elassy emphasized the potential threat of waterborne infections, underscoring the importance of practicing good hygiene and ensuring access to clean water.

In addition to respiratory infections, rain can introduce a range of other illnesses, including those transmitted by mosquitoes. Dr. Grace Fabrizia Graziani, a specialist in family medicine at Aster Royal Clinic Arabian Ranches, warned that flooding and water stagnation can foster the growth of waterborne pathogens, causing various illnesses such as diarrhoea, vomiting, and respiratory issues. She also highlighted the risk of injuries from debris and sharp objects in floodwaters, particularly affecting children who are more likely to play in and around water.

Indicators
The following are signs of illnesses that residents should be vigilant about:

  1. Diarrhea
  2. Vomiting
  3. Fever
  4. Stomach cramps
  5. Muscle aches
  6. Headaches

Prevention
Ensuring the safety of children during heavy rainfall is paramount.

"Emphasize good hygiene and administer annual flu vaccinations for children aged six months and above, particularly those in regular contact with others. Provide access to clean water, appropriate clothing, and a well-balanced diet," advised Dr. Sajwani.

Parents should instruct children to avoid stagnant water. Dr. Elassy recommended, "Prioritize their well-being by ensuring proper ventilation, addressing symptoms promptly, and considering keeping them at home from school during intense rainfall."

"Be vigilant for symptoms, promptly seek medical attention if necessary, and, if feasible, adjust schedules or activities during prolonged periods of heavy rainfall," he added.

Modifying children's routines and environments is one effective way to mitigate health risks during adverse weather conditions.

Here are additional recommendations:

1. Dress them suitably for the weather and maintain good hygiene

2. Restrict outdoor activities: Minimize exposure to floodwaters, stagnant water, and mosquitoes.

3. Ensure children's living spaces remain clean and dry: This prevents the development of molds and mildew.

4. Employ a dehumidifier: Remove moisture from the air to decrease the risk of mold and mildew growth.

5. Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces.
