Motorists who do not give way to pedestrians will be fined Dh500 and given six black points

On various roads throughout Abu Dhabi, artificial intelligence radars are being used to track and capture motorists who do not stop at pedestrian crossings.

As seen in a video shared on several social media platforms, Abu Dhabi Police have activated smart radar to reduce pedestrian runovers in Abu Dhabi by detecting reckless drivers and jaywalkers.

In accordance with the police, the smart system, known as 'Hather' (Be Careful) is designed to remind drivers to stick to the traffic laws and give priority to pedestrians crossing from designated areas.

Abu Dhabi's authorities said they were currently studying the new smart system near schools and commercial centers following a successful pilot phase.

The radars during the pilot phase detected several vehicles violating the traffic laws and sent only instructions to drivers about stopping completely when pedestrians, who were in the designated crosswalk areas, crossed the road.

If a driver fails to give way to a pedestrian, he or she will be fined Dh500 and given six black points.

In the vicinity of pedestrians and crossings, police suggested drivers follow traffic signs and drive at an appropriate speed, which is probably below the speed limit.

A new smart radar was introduced last year by Abu Dhabi Police to catch jaywalkers and drivers who don't stop at pedestrian crossings.

In addition, pedestrians have been urged to cross streets using footbridges and tunnels and to heed the pedestrian lights at intersections, which work in tandem with traffic signal systems.

According to police, crossing from non-designated areas is one of the leading causes of run-over accidents. The law should be enforced so that people are discouraged from committing dangerous acts.

In the Emirate, a fine for jaywalking is Dh400.

The police fined 48,000 pedestrians for not using zebra crossings or crossing from non-designated spots in Abu Dhabi last year.
