The UAE is to invest $4 million in a project to empower rural women in Liberia to achieve sustainable incomes and a greater quality of life.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Abu Dhabi green energy company Masdar and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation signed an agreement announced on Monday.

The project will help 1,500 rural Liberian women to improve food security and nutrition.

Sustainable living will also be central to improving the environmental and economic opportunities for the women.

Seeds for agricultural use, wells, aquifers, gardens and orchards will also be provided, along with advanced machinery.

The project will also help the women to strengthen their leadership skills and entrepreneurship.

Flexible funding will enable the women working in poultry and vegetable production to cope with possible financial crises in their lives, the state news agency Wam reported.

Masdar will set up a solar-powered system for modern production of vegetables, poultry and rice.

Masdar has previously set up humanitarian projects in remote areas around the world, from the Pacific Islands to North Africa and the Caribbean.
